Permafrost Gameplay Guide: How Survival Works

Updated 2026-10-14 · Last checked 2026-10-14 · Early Access

Permafrost is a scarcity survival game, not a shooter with a weather skin. The store page describes a loop of scavenging, crafting, and building a network of shelters so you can reach colder ground. Progress comes from repairing abandoned shelters, fixing machines, and recovering technology.

This hub explains the official gameplay loop and routes you to source-based references. It is not a hands-on review or complete walkthrough. Community file data is labeled separately from verified live functionality; precise drop rates and total completion time are not established.

The loop the store page actually describes

You explore frozen cities and wilderness, hunt, scavenge, and deal with factions that hold territory. The publisher page sets this in 2035 after the Moon shatters. You are Rook, an engineer following a radio signal from a missing friend. A dog companion is part of the launch announcement, not a mod.

The tone note on the store page is specific: a quiet survival experience without constant gunfire and without fantasy set pieces. If a video shows a different game with the same name, check the Steam app id 2254990 before you follow its tips.

What to learn first

These are the systems that block the first hours. Each has its own page.

Story progress, playtime and what is still planned

The store FAQ describes a narrative starting point with side quests, not a completed 1.0 story. There is no independently verified completion-time estimate here. The story page covers the premise and quest blockers; endgame covers goals you can choose after available quests. Vehicles and sledgehammer demolition must be checked against the roadmap, not assumed from search suggestions.
